Art to Wear at Q
Thursday, July 24th, 2008To paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt who said: “Walk quietly…and carry a big stick” my style adage is “dress plainly and carry a big rock” …and what better way to do it then with 150 year old pieces of Victorian Indian jewellery from Mumbai-based Kavita Behl or with home-grown talent Dave Soh. Both offer a different look…you may like one or the other, or like me, BOTH!
Kavita’s pieces are ornate and super-embellished and the irony is that I find they can be used in an understated way with casual jeans during the day or in a bedazzling way to complement evening dress. Style it up, experiment with it….its jewellery it won’t bite back.
Dave Soh’s jewellery is indeed marvelous, his aesthetic unsurpassed…ask T, she is a big fan and has several of his more understated yet flamboyant pieces. The irony of that phrase is what gives him his unique and totally identifiable design aesthetic. His new collection launched at Q recalls flower posies, enameled ladybugs and all creatures great and small. It is in a word “fantastical”. We predict the totally talented Dave will become an international brand…be there at the beginning of this talent’s roll-out.
